The Birth and Legacy of a Historic Lodge
The origins of Freedom Lodge #112 date back to a pivotal time in American history when sixteen dedicated brothers from George Washington Lodge No. 94 of Westminster envisioned establishing a more accessible lodge in their thriving community of Freedom. Fueled by their unwavering commitment and the growing tensions within the United States, these determined individuals embarked on a journey to create a lasting Masonic legacy.
Building Upon Generosity and Dedication
Through the profound generosity of Brother John T. Steele and under the guidance of the Most Worshipful Grand Master John S. Berry, Freedom Lodge #112 was established on February 1, 1862. This marked the inception of a revered Masonic chapter in Carroll County, Maryland, reflecting the essence of Masonic membership and unity.
Official Recognition
In the annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Maryland on May 12, 1862, Most Worshipful Grand Master John S. Berry announced that he had granted a dispensation to the brethren residing in Freedom in Carroll County. This allowed them to open and hold lodges at that place to make Masons. The charter was officially granted the next day, on May 13, 1862.
